Service Description

“To journey and be transformed by the journey is to be a pilgrim.” - Mark Nepo People all around are talking about pilgrimage! But what does it mean to be a pilgrim? One doesn’t need to travel anywhere to experience life as pilgrimage because it is a way of life. While it can be discovered on foot, treading the well-worn paths on the way to holy sites, it also can be consciously cultivated in our regular lives because the sacred exists in abundance. Beginning in October, we will meet once a month to explore the notion of “life as pilgrimage.” Our core text will be “The Soul of a Pilgrim, Eight Practices for the Journey Within” by Christine Valters Painter and we will draw upon many other resources. We will gather monthly online for two hours for the prayerful experience of art and practices, including SoulCollage®, meditative walks, Visio Divina, creative photography, and Celtic practices. Val Hornburg will lead us on this retreat. She is a companion to people on their heart and soul journeys. She is a spiritual director, a SoulCollage® and labyrinth facilitator, she leads retreats and workshops. She is an artist and a student of the Franciscan tradition. She is also a mother who has allowed love to shape her understanding of God and church. In 2018, she and her husband walked the Way of St Francis, a pilgrimage walk from LaVerna to Assisi in Italy. It was life altering. In June 2022, they walked St Cuthbert’s Way across the southern border of Scotland ending on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Again, it was truly transformative. We will meet on the second Wednesday of each month, for eight months, beginning in October. We will gather online using Zoom. You will need to secure a copy of the book, Soul of the Pilgrim by Christine Valters Painter. The retreat fee is $175 for the year.
