Service Description

As we approach the holidays we are invited to practice these holy days with clear eyes and open hearts. Too much stress over holidays can diminish their spiritual value and fatigue us. By simplifying how we decorate and entertain, we will rediscover the joy around sacred celebrations. We can reclaim time in a way that enhances our spiritual lives. Join us as we explore ways that we can artistically approach Chanukah, Advent, and Christmas through light and color. Our host and teacher is the Reverend Denise Andersen, an ordained minister who has led Art and Spirit Circles while serving as parish pastor in Milwaukie and Chicago. She has been exploring liturgical and holy day art for decades, applying this knowledge to how we personally celebrate our holy days. She is a prolific retreat and workshop leader covering topics from creative journaling to designing sacred spaces. Originally inspired by Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, Denise found that at the intersection of art and contemplation is a deeply spiritual practice. Rev Andersen, a member of the Three Rivers Art Guild, currently is working on a multi-media work of art based on the Stations of the Cross with an environmental justice focus. Join to pause and prepare for the holy days of Advent, Chanukah, and Christmas. We meet in person at the Franciscan Spiritual Center. Invite a friend and stay late for a walk on the former Marylhurst campus. All supplies will be provided. Class fee is $40. Register using the link below. The course offering, which is entitled “Light One Candle: Holy Days Made Simple,” gathers in person. Thursday, November 30, 1-3:30pm Franciscan Spiritual Center San Damiano Room 3159 Furman Drive, Marylhurst, OR 97036 (503) 794-8542
