Service Description

Prayer flags are used as a way to promote peace, compassion, and wisdom. As the wind blows the flags spread the intention of the words. Creating a prayer flag can be a contemplative way to pause and reflect and clarify one’s prayers. Offering up our created desires into the wind is a way to live with and meditate on our ongoing and evolving desires for harmony and peace in the world. We will gather on a Saturday morning to turn our hearts, minds, and bodies to the crafting of five prayers of our own choosing. Barbara Vandepas, a former teacher and a practitioner of meditation for 45 years, will lead us. She will provide a brief historical background and a centering meditation before we turn to the act of creating our prayers. Participants will receive five flags and the cording to hang them. She will provide mandala templates representing wholeness and unity. We will choose our own words or phrases to write on the flags. Expect fun and joy of creating together and supporting each person's creation as gifts from God through us. We will meet in person at the Franciscan Spiritual Center on the former Marylhurst University campus (now known as Marylhurst Commons). Invite a friend and do some walking and exploring on the beautiful campus. Bring a sack lunch as there will be a lunch break. All supplies will be provided. Class fee is $30.
