Service Description

Contemplative Outreach of Portland will be back at the Franciscan Spiritual Center on Wednesday, May 10, to provide an Introductory Workshop on Centering Prayer. If you are new to Centering Prayer, or learned it on your own during the pandemic, or simply want a refresher course, this event will offer you a solid foundation and a community to support your prayer practice. The morning workshop, which begins at 9:30 and lasts until noon will be led by commissioned presenters of Contemplative Outreach, Ltd. The format includes teaching (including four talks) and practice (including two periods of Centering Prayer). We will meet at the Franciscan Spiritual Center’s meeting room, Willow, in Clark Commons and located at 3162 Furman Drive, Marylhurst, Oregon 97036 (which is on the grounds of the former Marylhurst University, now known as Marylhurst Commons). The doors will open at 9am. Centering Prayer is a receptive method of silent prayer developed in 1981 by Trappist Monk, Father Thomas Keating, in which we experience God’s presence within us - closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer forms both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. For information contact Janis Carlson at jnscarlson@gmail.com. It is recommended that you begin reading the book Open Mind, Open Heart by Father Keating before the workshop. A requested donation will be $10.
