Service Description

Art & Memory: Creative Ways to Memorialize Your Loved Ones Many spiritual traditions believe that our loved ones stay alive as long as we “say their names” or remember them. It is said we experience two deaths – our first natural death and our death when we are no longer remembered. In this afternoon class as we approach All Saints Day, we will explore artistic ways we can keep the names of our loved ones actively present in our lives. Together we will reflect on St Francis’ theology of embracing “Sister Death, from whom no living person can escape.” Our host and facilitator is the Reverend Denise Andersen, an ordained minister who has led Art and Spirit Circles while serving as parish pastor in Milwaukie and Chicago. She is a prolific retreat and workshop leader covering topics from creative journaling to designing sacred spaces. Originally inspired by Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, Denise found that at the intersection of art and contemplation is a deeply spiritual practice. Rev Andersen, a member of the Three Rivers Art Guild, currently is working on a sixteen-piece multi-media work of art based on the Stations of the Cross with an environmental justice focus. The installation was funded by the Lilly Foundation. Join to pause around All Saints Day to reflect, remember, and love with our hearts and our creative spirits. We meet in person at the Franciscan Spiritual Center. Invite a friend and arrive early or stay late for a walk on the former Marylhurst campus. Bring photos and symbols of your loved ones who have passed into the next realm. All other supplies will be provided. Class fee is $40. Register using the link below. The course offering, which is entitled “Art & Memory: Creative Ways to Memorialize Your Loved Ones,” gathers in person. Thursday, October 26, 1-3:30pm Franciscan Spiritual Center San Damiano Room 3159 Furman Drive, Marylhurst, OR 97036 (503) 794-8542
