Altered Books: A Holy Saturday retreat
Contemplative Art exploration
Service Description
Holy Saturday, the day between Good Friday and Easter, is often observed with silence. And in some traditions, that silence ends with a Vigil that spans all of salvation history, from creation through resurrection. Along the way, stories encompass the beginning of time, the call to belonging, slavery, wandering, empire, and rebellion. The images evoked cover fire, water, earth, sky. There is birth and death and rebirth. And there is the silence of absence. Spend a day with us exploring what emerges for you through those images. To paraphrase Meister Eckhardt, “When the soul wants to have an experience, she throws an image in front of her and she steps into it.” Our process involves taking children’s board books and ornamenting them with images, color and texture. This process—called “altered book”—invites the soul to experience on a deeper level the meaning of that great arc of birth-death-rebirth to us. And in that exploration, perhaps absence will reveal the hope of return. The guide in this experience, Eileen Parfrey, is experienced in book altering. Saturday, March 30, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Bring a sack lunch; tea and coffee will be provided. Presenter: Eileen Parfrey Cost: $70 including materials Maximum 12 participants
