Service Description

In his 2021 book, “Walking with Francis of Assisi—from privilege to activism," Brian Epperly charts the conversion and transformation of Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, Francesco, who he calls, “a saint for our time." Epperly masterfully describes the “poor man of Assisi” as he ponders his call and the decisions he makes to follow that call. The author’s pilgrimage to Assisi and subsequent walks on beaches near his home in Massachusetts dared him to examine his own privilege and his call to social justice. Each chapter is an invitation to join St. Francis on a journey to become more Christ-like because, to quote Teresa of Avila, “Christ has no body but ours." Epperly relates stories that acknowledges Francis’ initial reaction to the musings of the Spirit and how with time in prayer, he moved from contemplation to action. The author acknowledges both the differences and similarities between the 13th century mystic and our 21st century obstacles. He invites and challenges us to become everyday mystics like Francis and to follow in the footsteps of Christ. Terry Cappiello (our book group facilitator) is a board member and retreat leader with the Franciscan Spiritual Center as well as a former mental health counselor, special education teacher, and college professor. She is gifted and inclusive in her capacity to draw people into discussion.
