In the Middle Ages, when most people could not read, icons served as "windows into the sacred," revealing the stories and presence of God through images. One such icon—the San Damiano Cross—profoundly shaped the lives of St. Francis and St. Clare and continues to inspire Franciscans today. It was before this cross that Francis heard Christ's call: "Rebuild my Church, for it is falling into ruin." Clare, too, spent countless hours in prayer before the San Damiano Cross. In her letters to Agnes of Prague, Clare encouraged her to gaze, consider, contemplate, and imitate the Christ revealed through this sacred image. Join us for a day of retreat as we explore the history, symbolism, and spiritual significance of the San Damiano Cross. Through prayer, reflection, and quiet contemplation, discover how this beloved icon can deepen your own relationship with Christ. We will conclude the day by celebrating the Transitus—the commemoration of St. Francis' passage from this life into eternal life on October 3. Through prayer, song, and reflection, join Franciscans around the world in honoring Francis' final witness of faith and his joyful embrace of "Sister Death." Special Programs: Some offerings—such as overnight retreats, off-site events, or programs involving outside vendors—may have stricter cancellation deadlines. These will be noted in the program description. Center Cancellations: If the Franciscan Spiritual Center must cancel a program, you will receive a full refund via your original payment method.
